About Us
Organized in the early 1960s by Fischer Explorer Scouts, the Fischer Rescue Squad (FRS) is the oldest operating rescue squad in DeKalb County and among the oldest in Alabama. Based in Fort Payne, FRS was founded to serve the Lookout Mountain and Fischer communities and has remained a steady presence in emergency response for more than six decades.
FRS specializes in high-angle and technical rope rescue, swiftwater rescue, dive recovery, canyon operations, and search and rescue missions throughout some of Alabama's most rugged terrain, including Little River Canyon National Park Preserve and DeSoto State Park. Our team is highly trained in complex rescue environments where steep cliffs, swift water, and difficult access roads often prevent conventional emergency vehicles and personnel from reaching those in need.
As a volunteer- based organization and proud member of the Alabama Association of Rescue Squads, FRS responds to approximately 35 calls a year, with that number increasing significantly during peak visitor seasons. We serve as a trusted mutual aid partner for agencies throughout DeKalb County and neighboring areas.
At its core, Fischer Rescue Squad is community-driven. Our members live and work in the same communities we serve, and we are deeply committed to protecting both residents and visitors. We work closely with local law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, state park officials, and federal agencies to ensure coordinated, efficient, and safe operations. Through strong partnerships and a shared mission of service, FRS remains a reliable resource for DeKalb County and beyond.
